Farm Predicament and Lack of Action
I am writing this letter to address the farm situation at our school. Every year more and more kids join FFA and raise animals for the fair. The conditions our school offers to house these animals are unlivable and unhealthy. In past years these issues have been addressed and were allegedly supposed to be fixed, but never were. Something has to be done about it. First off, the school needs to expand the farm so there is more space for pens and storage. With the conditions of living space we have now, multiple animals are cramped into one cage where it is to small for them to move around healthily and become very unsanitary considering all the feces that build up in a short period of time which the animals have to sleep and eat in. A proposal for expanding the farm can be to take the baseball field that is next to it for the reason that we have multiple baseball and softball fields. Secondly, pigs and lambs die every year because of how unhealthy the conditions are. Also, I've heard many stories about people who do not feed their lambs or pigs twice a day and the animals get skinny and sick. Some even did for this reason. That is NOT okay. If we are going to let students take care of these animals, they should never miss a meal. A staff member, such as an Ag advisor, must make sure each animal is fed the minimal amount of twice a day and if the owner of the animal does not feed it, there needs to be someone always there to feed it no matter what. I hope to see a change in the near future.
