California's Recent Rainfall

California's much-needed rainy season has relieved the severe five-year drought. However, 60% of California still remains severely dry. Water officials refuse to assume that California's recent days and weeks of pouring rain may cause a major turnaround.

Every year the Sierra Nevada snowpack usually replenishes dried out rivers after the winter season, which is California's major water storage facility. Still, Global warming poses as a threat as it may cause the snow to melt too soon, reducing the amount of water we could gain. Also, the cities that are suffering the most from the drought in the San Joaquin Valley and the Central Coast, remain unaffected by recent weather conditions and remain severely parched. Much of the drought has come close to an end in Northern California, but the Southern regions have yet to catch a break. Scientists say California could face permanent drought conditions due to "man-made" climate change in a 2015 scientific study.
