The Newest Fashion Statement & Why You Should Try It

It’s been a week since the final tally of our nation’s presidential election, and the country is still in an uproar; whether positive or negative, no one can deny that this was an election for the books.

Both parties had numerous displays of support or opposition to the final outcome. In this week alone there have been celebrations and meetings to congratulate president elect Donald Trump; however, during these 7 days there have also been many examples of protest, walkouts, and riots to demonstrate hundreds of thousands of people’s distaste for our nation’s executive branch. The people most vocal about the recent events are those that identify as members of the LGBTQ+* community, women, and minority groups.

One of the more peaceful examples of protest has been in the clothing of certain individuals that want to show their support to all types of people within our country. The safety pin movement encourages anyone that supports all people to wear a safety pin on the lapel of their jackets, shirts or on any clothes over their chest to let everyone know where their support lies. Wearing the safety pin is the newest symbol of support for people that are uneasy and fearful of what may come.

The safety pin movement is the first of hopefully many forms of silent yet impactful movements to come. Just remember that it isn’t always about being vocal and using violence, it is about being there when people need reassurance, it is about knowing your cause and being conscious of the repercussions of any negative actions.

Wearing a safety pin is simple and easy to do if you believe in the cause or want to be a part of something bigger.

*LGBTQ+ is the acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning and others
