Our 2016 Senior Auctions
This year’s senior auction, an annual event at SHS that helps raise funds for seniors Disneyland Grad Night Trip, was held last week November 7th through the 11th. Jacob Perales, Mr. Herrera, and Alec Ramirez served as the auctioneers, calling seniors whose names appeared on their lists to be auctioned off. Bids were all started at $5. The class of 2017 raised a lot of funds as individuals and duos were sold for a variety of prices. Although some students were sold for a fairly low price, people were still interested in paying as much money as they could to make these seniors their “servants” for one day. Bidders would raise their hands to place a bid, sometimes partcipating in a bidding war. As seniors made their way up to the amphitheater, a detailed account of their services or favorite things was provided to entice buyers into paying for them. Some of the services included: doing homework, sitting together at lunch, or everyone's favorite: getting humiliated. All fully consensual and done in a spirit of fun to raise school spirit and ease costs for Seniors. Senior boy duos, Brandon Hughes and Manuel Reyes, were sold for a total of $220. “I did the senior auction because I wanted to raise money for Grad Night. Surprisingly, we were sold for $220. We don't regret selling ourselves at all”, Reyes said. Jacob Perales, a single, was sold for $100 mentioning that he would be doing his their homework, rapping, and writing a song for his buyer. “I decided to sell myself for the senior auction because the money is going toward our senior trip. At first, I intended to pay it myself, but because it's senior year, I thought "Why not?" It doesn't matter if I get sold for a lot or a little bit. I went out there with confidence and hoped to get most of my senior trip payed off. I think I'm going to get a good time out of whatever my buyers want to dress me up do", commented Perales when AD asked why he decided to sell himself. While senior auctions were a huge success, there has been rumors of an extended time period where seniors who did not get sold last week would have the opportunity to be sold later in the month. As of right now, there has not been a confirmed date of when the seniors are to be dressed up or will have to follow through with their commitments to buyers.
