School Apparel, Now an Issue at Soledad High?

School colors are a very important aspect in school tradition because they allow us to represent our school. In recent events, it has come to the boards’ attention that Soledad High School sports and clubs are not abiding by the appropriate 'colors of the school'. According to the board minutes of 1999, the official school colors are purple, vegas gold, and white; an alternate color. Even so, some sports have been using black as their jersey uniform alternate color. This caught the boards’ eye,

leading them to bring it up in Septembers board meeting. They are now being stricter on the colors and fonts we decide to use on our spirit wear and jersey uniforms. The Associated Student Body and Ms.Kuchta, our athletic director, are no longer allowed to approve any apparel that does not follow the official colors and font of our school.

This issue has raised many eyebrows and concerned many students, teachers, and coaches. Coaches argue that so much money has been raised to afford these uniforms, and it is outrageous to ask that they do not wear them while students claim that they should be allowed to express their spirit for their school in whatever style they choose. Teachers who advise clubs, like coaches, also put money into their apparel and find it to be a waste not to be allowed to wear it.

Ms. Adams, our school's activity director, argued that, "After high school, kids won't blend into their new schools wearing an all purple sweater, but wearing a black sweater with some purple or gold will allow them to blend in and will last the student longer beyond high school."

Is the board making a big deal of something minor? Or is it an issue that must be brought to everyones attention?
