We smell Prom

With prom right around the corner, a heated discussion has formed around the idea of it being held on a yacht rather than the traditional hotel or country club. Speculation of sea sickness and worry of individuals getting claustrophobic has flooded students minds. At the parent meeting held on Wednesday; however, parents seemed to be more concerned about the distance of the venue located in Alameda, a small island south of Oakland, California. A lot of discomfort was primarily expressed because of the idea of students being two hours away from home in the event that an emergency was to occur.

Along with distance, questions arose regarding transportation and whether students with licenses would be allowed to drive to the location. With this being the first time the Soledad District and the school board have allowed a prom venue to exceed more than 60 miles away from campus, it seems to have had an overwhelming effect. To address these concerns, the Junior Class has assured that transportation will be made available to every individual as students will not be permitted to drive or be driven by parents; dinner will also be provided.

Overlooking the inevitable controversy regarding distance and transportation, this change of scenery has the potential to be a great experience for students. As of now, Prom is set to take place May 13 with single tickets being sold at $120. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact the Junior Class of 2018 through Twitter @SHSProm2017, or stop by Ms. Adams, Room 305.
